Serotonin Reuptake Inhilbitors in Depression

Abstract
Clinical studies consistently show that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRls) do not different from tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) in efficacy and onset of action in the treatment of depression. But SSRls clearly have a different side
effects compared with TCAs. Although SSRls lack anticholinergic. antihistaminic and antiadrenergic side effects, the SSRls have side effects of their own that can result discontinuation of treatment. But the patients who are intolerant to one
SSRl
are
tolerant to antother SSRl with good efficacy. And also there are some evidences that SSRls have advantage in the treatment of specific symptoms and subgroups of depression. So differences in pharmacological profile raise question of whether that
are
significant difference in their side effects. therapeutic efficacy at least some specific symptoms of depression.
This review focuses the pharmacology. therapeutic efficacy and side effects of SSRls and TCAs. and the author emphasizes the differences among the SSRls through the three points of view.
